Behar-Bechukotai, 18 Iyar 5777

May 14, 2017

This month of Iyar is an opportunity for healing of body, heart and soul. One way we can heal is through a deeper connection to the Light of the Creator. Meditation, prayer and mitzvot are the tools we can use. Meditation can be simple, like focusing on one of the Divine Names or observing your own breath. Prayer is either structured in the form of a blessing or can be an utterance from within. Many confuse prayer with asking the Creator for things we want or need. Prayer, according to the Kabbalists, is about becoming aware and awakening the divine spark within each of us. Mitzvah (plural - mitzvot) is often mistranslated as "commandment" or "good deed", but the root word comes from the Hebrew word "to bind." So a mitzvah is really a way to bind ourselves to the Divine through performing a certain act or using a certain tool. As we start making a practice of using these tools this month for healing, we will be able to take this practice into the rest of the year.

S'firat HaOmer (Counting of The Omer)
S'firat HaOmer begins on the 2nd day of Pesach and continues for 49 days until Shavuot. Each night we will hold a brief community S'firat HaOmer service with meditation at 9:00 PM EDT unless there's another event scheduled. Check our CALENDAR for specific dates and times. You can see what day of the Omer we are on by looking at the top right of our website on any page. Clicking the Day will launch our S'firat HaOmer connection if you wish to do it on your own.

Our Community Needs Your Support
The word "tzedakah" in Hebrew means charity, but actually the word is derived from the root word which means righteousness, justice or fairness. Giving is not viewed as a generous act, it is simply an act of righteousness and justice. Tzedakah is in many ways an exchange of energy and is a visible expression of gratitude in this world for that which we have received. We rely on the generosity of others so that we may make our siddurim (prayer books) and other resources available for all, as well as continue to offer meaningful studies and inspiring services. Please help support our community by making a DONATION. We thank you in advance for your generosity.
